About 1/3 of people over 65 and 1/2 of people over 80 fall each year. This can have very serious consequences to your health and independence therefore prevention is key!
Here are 5 tips to help you stay safe on Montreal streets this winter.
1) A crucial way to prevent falls and strengthen bones is to work on maintaining or improving your strength and balance. There are a number of exercise options that can help you achieve this such as joining a tai chi or postural stability class. Visit or call the recreational department in your community to find out about exercise classes close to you.
2) If you have a history of falls or haven’t been as active in recent years see your physiotherapist for a prescribed exercise program. This may include exercises to strengthen your muscles and improve your balance.
3) Wear sturdy and well-fitting shoes and avoid loose-fitting clothing that drags to avoid tripping while you are walking around your house. Avoid walking outdoors if the conditions are wet or icy. If you do have to venture outdoors be sure to have someone accompany you or drive you.
4) Be hyper vigilant when you are in a “high fall risk zone”. These include busy recreational areas such as parking garages and parking lots.
4) Avoid distractions and move slower when you are performing more challenging activities such as walking on uneven ground, opening and closing doors and carrying items.
5) Be sure to adapt your assistive devices to meet outdoor conditions. If you are using your cane in the ice and snow look into adding an “ice tip” attachment: This is a sharp pick that will allow for better grip.
